NWGA ensures its policies, procedures and systems of work support and, where possible, exceed compliance with all Op Co requirements. NWGA regularly and pro-actively examines, shares and integrates Industry Best Practice with both its Parent Company and within the Pan-Alliance Group.
The NWGA prides itself on being at the forefront of innovation, with a dedicated Innovation and Recycling Manager tasked with seeking out new and innovative systems of work, machinery and methodology, with a primary focus on Health and Safety & Environmental improvements.
We have tasked ourselves through our Environment plan with reducing the impact our works have on the environment wherever possible.
We continue to reduce the amount of spoil take to landfill and are now proud that we currently recycle 85% of all excavated material.
Through Innovation the NWGA is fully committed to reducing the risks to health, safety and the environment.
The NWGA Innovation officer Andy Edwards continues to look at all aspects of the Alliances, aiming to reduce any harm caused by Alliance activates.
To date we have developed two key pieces of equipment, namely the new Pathboard and drain cover both made from waste P.E Pipe.
NWGA have as a result won a National Green Apple award and 5 Rowan Tree awards (NG director award) for environmental best practise.
Pathboard
The recycled Pathboard was developed when it was recognised that an alternative needed to be found for lighter pathboard which we not easily secured to footways and had resulted in a number of injuries to Members of the Public.

The new board was made from waste P.E which would previously been sent to landfill. The new board is stronger, can be secured easily to footways and support the weight of both pedestrians and vehicles crossing footways. The contribution the board has made was recognised when it recently won a National Green Apple award.
Drain Cover
NWGA also developed a drain cover, this is used in locations where our activities may generate either silty water or cause spoil to potential enter un protected drains. The drain covers is once again made from Waste P.E and has been recently trailed within NWGA , National Grid and other Alliances.
