The NWGA run an exciting programme to deliver an alternative and innovative training programme to a group of Yr 10 students from the local schools.
These students will spend a minimum of 50 days with
the NWGA over a 2 year period, where, on successfulcompletion of the course, will have achieved
a level 2 City & Guilds NVQ qualification in gas engineering.
This gas apprenticeship will be one of the first 2
in the country and will, along with the courses for the water and electric
divisions complete the suite of Young Apprenticeships in the utility industry.
The course will cover all aspects of working in this
industry, from "how engineering shaped the industrial revolution" and "the
history of gas" to the development of new innovations, from the initial risk
assessment of a site to installation and commissioning of systems, and will
utilise practical demonstrations, visits by people and organisations in the
industry, excursions to locations such as the Manchester Museum of Science and
Industry, as well the delivery of classroom based theory.
We are hoping that this initiative will not only
help enrich the education experience of the students, but, by introducing our
industry to this age group, will increase the awareness and appeal of careers
here for them in the future. The NWGA are proud to be part of this fantastic
initiative, and are confident that, the students and the NWGA will
gain considerably through their involvement.
